Sunday Tour with Costa and family

Sunday we spent the day touring Durban with our host family. Costa took us to see some original art deco architecture around town followed by a trip to the Durban Botanical Gardens. At the gardens we caught site of some young monkeys running around the trees and some interesting plant life including a Canonball tree. Afterwards we headed outside of Durban to see the Albert Luthuli Homestead. Albert Luthuli was an African leader against the apartheid and the first African to win the Nobel Peace Prize. We also learned that while he was under house arrest, he was forbidden to leave the grounds. When Robert F. Kennedy was visiting South Africa, he requested a meeting with Albert Luthuli and was declined due to the provisions of his house arrest. RFK therefore took a small helicopter and landed at the Luthuli homestead on a small patch of land to obtain his meeting after all.

After leaving the Luthuli homestead we headed over to Gateway Mall, which resembles a Mall of America in that there is a water park and other activities to be had other than shopping. Later in the afternoon some of us went to the UShaka Marine World on the waterfront. There we saw sharks, stingrays, and a dangerous reptile exhibit. We headed home for an early night to get some rest before starting our busy week in Edendale.
